It's amazing that I can be so stupid TWICE

Never a flippin' dull moment here

I lost Sugarfoot again

I made the mistake of taking her out last night
on her 15 ft rope with a heavy halter
and all was well
then she pulled away from me
twice

and the second time
rounded the house
and went right out the open gate

yes
I am SO DUMB

I left the gate open again

and off she went

Wade grabbed his Olga horse
and saddled up
I chased on foot

I caught her shortly
I was so happy

and she pulled away AGAIN

this time she headed for open land
Wade in hot pursuit
8 pm at night
dusk falling

I sent Mercy to Grandma's
forked Monte bareback
and headed out

got a call from a neighbor he's caught her
and come with another halter and rope

turned out he caught her 3 times
and each time she attacked him
jumping herself up and over Olga

the last time he got tired of it
and looked for a tree to fork
he found one
at a dead run
with a drop off and wash behind it

they forked it
both horses crashed head on
everyone went ass over teakettle
and she was gone again

I meanwhile
went back and got another halter and rope
as requested
and saddled up
longtrotted 2 miles out to
where they were

found Wade walking back on foot
Olga limping
big welts on her shoulder
from Sugarfoot
covered in dirt and sand

I got off and we walked the 2 miles back
thru the desert
no trail
no flashlight

that takes some confidence
when it's snake season

I only fell in one wash
because I can't see in the dark
and there was no moon at all

Wade was so mad he couldn't speak

he looked a bit tore up
and wore a hole in his boots
walking home
this is what it looks like when a horse
beats the crap out of you
in the dark

that's his boot he's holding
I think they're about done in

we went out in the truck till midnight
checked all gates and cattle guards
found her trail along the fence line

lost her in a rough spot
gave up

I rode out on Quinn this morning
found where she got around us
and doubled back
twice

4 sets of tracks
dragging that rope

it's pretty easy to track
until the ground gets hard or rocky
then you lose the rope marks

didn't see her though

she's in this section behind us
so far...

at this point I'm so mad

I haven't eaten since early yesterday
I've alerted the sheriff

does anyone want to take over this project?

cause I'm about done with this shit

Holy cow. Must be catching. I've decided I'm done with my project too...

Be careful. Sure, you're the toughest cowgirl around and if anyone can deal with her, it'll be you.

But I hear you...

OOOOOH YEAH, been there done that sent her down the road.

I gave up on a mustang mare last years, I figured 4 years of that sort of thing was her Waterloo. She dumped me 3 times, jumped out of the corral, broke 2 8 foot 2 X 12 corral boards ran away and nearly made it to the BLM, except for the cattle guard she would have been gone.

I decided then and there she would never be trustworthy. I traded her to a self assured buckaroo wannabe that told me "You must not have done your ground work" ..... yeah whatever.

I wonder if he's completed her groundwork yet......?

Oh My Gosh ... YOU are my hero. I hope you get her. I have been following your blog and I love it. Keep us posted. I feel like a fool reading this when I am afraid to ride my daughters show pony. Man you are an inspiration.

Oh. Damn. Mikey.

Dude- Wade- I am SO freaking glad that mare did NOT hurt you or Olga too badly there. You gotta have some damn fine reflexes to dodge hooves of a MAD MAD horse. (Oh- wait.. never mind... ;) I know your job, and yeah, ya do!)

Mikey-- girl... Words fail me. But hang tough Wonder Woman, and keep us posted. Wish like crazy we could saddle up and help.

This is soooo too bad. No matter what happens, I am in extreme admiration of you. All I could think about today while I was riding Mio was 'She gets on the horse BAREBACK the first time?!?!?' I wish you the very best regardless of what you decide to do. And Wade is a true saint for trying so hard to bring your horse home. Carmon

Well at least Wade was able to smile for the picture. And you all lived to tell about it. I'll be prayin' for her safe and quick return and/or capture. Be careful out there.

Ohmygosh! That BAD, BAD girl! Doesn't she realize that you LOVE her (well, maybe not right now)? Please keep us all updated! Snakes...ugh!

Ah geez, your not stupid, that is one determined little horse! Man you get her in your pocket and she will be something else! You might need double chainlink around the whole place but....LOL LOL Youll find her again.

Awww C.R.A.P!!

Mikey that sucks. I do hope you guys find her. Hopefully she will come back for water???

I hope Olga is okay...and Wade. You guys be careful.

Mikey, much as I love reading about the saga of Sugarfoot, I do NOT like reading about a horse that attacks people, and especially one with the mindset of going through people and horses to get away. If you get her caught, and get her broke, she may come around but then again how can you trust that she isn't waiting for the moment of freedom again, and who will she go through to get it next time?
This just breaks my heart.

Hoooooly smokes!!
Glad you all lived to tell the tale. And good thing Wade wasn't hurt too badly. How about that pretty Olga, she ok?
Hopefully Sugarfoot will come back for water. Any reason hindsight can give you for her freaking out so bad?

Paint Girl said...

Oh no! I hope you get Sugarfoot back soon! Glad to hear Wade is ok! And you, wandering through the dark with snakes all around! Yikes!
I know you will get through this, and you will be be riding her before you know it!

Wade must be a pretty patient partner to have a smile for the camera.
You've got better things you could be spending your time on.

Shirley up above spoke my heart.

Sugarfoot is a wild spirit, and she may never change. It's as if she playing a game with you, making you believe she's giving in, like a prisoner following the rules in captivity, but once she sees a moment where she can break for freedom...she'll always try to take it. darn.

This is just heartbreaking, Mikey.

I know you've been putting your heart and soul into Sugarfoot, but there's gonna come a time when you'll have to dig deep and ask yourself, is all this really worth it?

Only you'll know when that time will be and what decision you should make. But don't let anyone make it for you.

Your safety, Wade's safety, Mercy's safety, your neighbor's safety, and your other horses' safety is the most important. Noone wants to see you seriously injured and unable to take care of all your other horses, dogs, daughter, hubby, and yourself, my friend. Please be safe, ok?

((((HUGS))))

Wow. I have no words except to say BE CAREFUL, which, of course, you are. Attacking people is scary, scary!

Somehow, as mad as you are, I bet you're too dang stubborn to give up.

Attacking people = lead therapy. You have a small child to think of!

I keep stopping by hoping there will be an update soon. How are Olga and Wade this morning? I'm sure both are at the very least stiff and sore. And I hope *you* got some food to eat! Take care of yourselves and I'm thanking God for happy mustangs you couldn't drive away with a whip...Carmon

DANG GIRL!!! Ever tried hog tieing a horse? I know I KNOW - its hard, can seem cruel... but there was an old feller that used to 'hog tie' em and sit on their shoulder and talk to them, while smoking his pipe.. He never had any trouble with those horses and I dont think that they were 'spirit broke' either if you konw what I mean....

BE CAREFUL Mikey... As much as I support your aproach - NO animal is worth getting seriously hurt over.... gosh I cant even imagine how 'torn' you are between wanting to shoot her the second she gets back on the place and hoping she is ok out there.... GAH!!!! Hugs to Wade - the Milk Man would have taken a 306 out with him at that point I think!!!! LOL

Gosh, if we were all there instead of in cyberland, we would all come help. Wish we could. Keep the faith! You'll find her!

OMG!

I know you may want to change her name from Sugarfoot to Barbeque right now, but remember that old song: "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again".

Good luck, we are all praying for you: Mikey, Wade, Mercy and Olga.

Sincerely,
Garlic Man

She needs more time. you left the gate open. she is a smart, wild horse. This horse needs you. please dont quit her. other people can quit this horse, abandon a tough case to who knows what horrible end but not you and wade. You know you are special horsemen. She is getting better and better. dont give up on her

PaintedPromise said...

dang it and that prior post was so positive! this just SUCKS! i'm so sorry... but i have to say, you've stuck with her much longer than i'd have had the patience for... much as i would like to see you win her over, it's even more important that you and your family and your critters and the neighborhood are not hurt by this mare.

i'd offer to come help look for her but if i spotted her i would probably turn tail and run, i know just enough to know that i myself could NOT handle her!!

one day at a time! hang in there...

Poor you and I have to say that Wade is a keeper. You sure didn't need this!
