Caught early

snake bites can be managed

here's how Thelma normally looks
swimming in the stock tank

and this is how she looks now

I called the clinic and said
"Hey ****, it's Mikey.
Is it super busy this morning?"

she said
"No, not too bad"

I said
"Oh good, can I add to it?"

she said
"Whatcha got?"

I told her and she checked
with the lady vet
who said bring Thelma in

see
even though I work there
I believe it's polite to ASK if I can get her in

we got in and Thelma got some
IV medications
and some take home pills

we agreed it was probably a snake bite
but she only got hit with one fang real good

the vet also said she usually see's these
a day or two later
when they're swollen like a pumpkin

we caught this so early that we
were literally watching Thelma swelling up
right before our eyes

but she'll be fine
the medication has worked and
the swelling seems to have stalled at this point

so everyone
if you even suspect a snake bite
get your dog to the vet

I should also point out
that rattlesnake vaccine for dogs
is available

however
it only covers sidewinders
not green mohaves

so only Little Dude has gotten that vaccine
this year

next year I will probably do all the dogs

I thought I was safe
since I haven't had a snake bit dog in 7 yrs

guess not

That is so scarey about Mercy! My brother was a sleep walker and I know my parents were always finding him outside. He outgrew it and hopefully she will too.

I hope all goes well with Thelma's recovery. I've dealt with a lot of copperhead bites but no rattlesnake fortunately. Copperheads are easy because they don't do the tissue damage. Good luck! Carmon

Holy crap. I turn my computer off for half a day and look what happens while I'm gone. Mercy Mercy Mercy Thelma Thelma Thelma ... give your mom an f'in break! And your widget tells me it's 107 degrees there. Chill, Mikey, chill. It's gotta get better.

Poor thing looks like a bull terrier now. Just without the ugly pig eyes. Thelma has prettier eyes.

Poor Thelma! My Sally dog got bit once and got over it without anything but it was hard to watch. We've had a few horses bit too and had to give meds to a couple of them

I hope Thelma recovers very soon!
The swelling looks so painful! I couldn't even imagine being but by a snake! Yikes!

That's awful. Sierra had night terrors when she was tiny and that was pretty horrible, but at least I always knew where to find her.

Poor pup. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Poor little girl. She must be uncomfortable. I'm so glad you got her some help before it was too late. She looks like such a good girl.

Poor pooch !Lucky she has you as her owner . I always asked before I went in to the clinic I worked at as well. After all people make appointments and its rotten if we make them wait . Give Thelma's poor nose a kiss from me!

I'm glad that she got checked out and is doing better. Do snakes bite a dog because it startles them, or do the dogs usually stick their nose towards the snake in curiosity? Luckily, we don't have snake issues around here!

Poor baby! That looks so terrible! I'm scared our golden will find a rattle snake to love that won't love him back. I'm going to ask our vet about a vaccine. Will it work on prairie rattle snakes by chance?
