More about today

I'm still reeling a bit
from today's events

It was slightly surreal
ya know?
This is the Mighty Quinn

I took no pictures today
when the 4 officers came out

I know
I'm sorry

but I was trying to show the horse
and I don't think you can just put police officers
up without permission
and I wasn't about to say
"Can I blog about you?"

I was saying
"He's UTD on his shots and wormer
and he'll have fresh shoes"

but I can share with you what they did!

They came out in a dually w/lights (cool)
I had Quinn out and brushed
and noticed he had a ding on his leg
but nothing big
just a little swelling... ugh
but it was ok, really

they looked him over
we talked, etc

they took him in hand
and brought out a goodie box

out came the string of cans
with caution tape waving
he had a good snort at that
but then he figured out what it was
and tried to eat them

that's my boy

then came the cap pistol
and I thought
"This is gonna be real interesting"

he dry fired it multiple times
Quinn was still looking for a carrot
and then apparently there were caps in there
cause it fired less than 2 ft from Quinn's cheek
and I swear to you
I jumped
and Quinn just looked at it
he never. even. flinched.

ok
even I didn't expect that

and they all were impressed with that

they walked around him
firing caps
and Quinn just stood there
like it was perfectly normal

me - eyebrow raised

and of course Monte came over
and hung his head over the fence like
"Whatcha all shooting at?"

they noticed that too
but I said I wasn't parting with him

then they tacked Quinn up
in an Aussie police saddle
the total real deal with the badge
on the breastcollar as I said earlier
and I swear
it choked me up
I will forever have that image burned in my brain
it was like
"This is actually happening, right now"

then they asked me to hop on
and I did
and that was a thrill too
and I trotted him up and down the road
stopped, backed, etc

came back
both women got on
one rode him into the big black garbage can
quite successfully

again
wow

then the biggest guy stood tall and waved arms
and the woman ran him over with Quinn

that was interesting too

see why I didn't take pictures?
I was standing there with my mouth hung open

then the shorter woman did the waving arms
and making weird noises
and Quinn was more hesitant about
running her over

I said
"Little women are way scarier"
and one of the guys said
"Ain't that the truth"

they did a flex test
and agreed he would do well
they will be back within a week for him

and I will miss him very much

but dang
I can't think of a better thing for a horse
and
there is an agreement
that I will get him back
if he gets hurt or washes out
or just plain retires

I'm still just simply stunned by all this
I mean, it's a 30 day trial
but still
I'm pretty amazed

that cap gun thing
who knew ??

One of the women turned and asked me
"Do you hunt off him?"
I said "No, never"

totally crazy...

Quinn has walked a long strange trip. Isn't he the one that you got from a meat auction? Saved from that, for this. What an honor.

Quinn is such a handsome boy! He looks too cute in that picture! It sounds like he did a great job! I am very impressed that he didn't even flinch with that cap gun. It kinda makes me want to go try it with my horse......hmmmmmmm......?

I wish Quinn the best of luck with his new job!! What an honor!!

That's fantastic! Quinn has found his purpose in life, I'm thinking. Kudos to you for making him the sensible horse that he is.

That's amazing. He's got nerves of steel. I'd jump out of my skin if someone shot off a gun near me. In fact someone was doing that the other night, only several blocks away, and I was still jumping out of my skin.

What a GOOD horse! Go Quinn! I hope he likes his new career. I'm glad you can get him back if it doesn't work out!

I can tell you that both my horses would not stand still with a cap gun going off! No way, no how! Good boy Quinn! Way to show the police how good you are!
I think it is so neat that he is going to get this opportunity! And that is cool that if things don't work out, you will get him back! Good luck Quinn!

Go Quinn!

LOL-Monte! I'll just bet they would have liked to have him too. A good looking gray with all of the training you have put on him-yea, they would have snapped him up in a heartbeat right along with Quinn.

Yeah for Quinn! What an honor. My dad is a retired police officer; he did the canine thing. I always thought we needed a mounted police dept here...I think they need Steve Holt!!

That's wonderful! I wish Quinn could give Sunni some lessons about remaining calm! Quinn is such a cutie pie! What is Quinn's story?

This says so much about how you work with your horses, that he took all of that in stride with complete trust. Amazing and wonderful! I especially like that he will come back to you eventually and spend his retirement days back at home, telling the other horses about all of his years on the force. Way to go! Carmon

That's so cool! I'm going to try and get my horse desensitized so that I can ride him in the parade next year. Lots of throwing candy, police sirens and waving flags so should be interesting

So Quinn is going into law enforcement. Wow. You must be a proud Mama. I think I would have taken a photo of him in his uniform, for sure.

So, do you think Quinn's hearing is impaired that he didn't react to the gun going off? Pretty impressive.

I have to admit, I'm a little bit sad that Quinn will be leaving, but I know he'll be contributing something important in a big way. I'm glad you put the clause in the agreement so you'll eventually get him back. Boy, the stories he'll tell!

Go Quinn!

(Do we need to ship you some special tissues when he leaves Mikey???)

Give the big lug a carrot from me, and tell him to be a Big Brave Man, who does his job well.

Wow! That is so cool! What an honor. You must be proud of your handsome boy.
I can't wait to read updates about him now. Try to get a photo of him in his uniform. Nothing like a man in uniform. hehe!

Way to go Mikey. You done good with this one. Quinn will get to do and see things and be used and loved. How much more could anyone ask for their horse?
